Formation of the First Planetesimals via the Streaming Instability in Globally Turbulent Protoplanetary Disks?

چکیده

Abstract Using self-consistent models of turbulent particle growth in an evolving protoplanetary nebula solar composition, we find that recently proposed local metallicity and Stokes number criteria necessary for the streaming instability to generate gravitationally bound overdensities are generally not approached anywhere disk during first million years, epoch which meteoritic observational evidence strongly suggests formation planetesimals perhaps giant planet core accretion already occurring.

Grain Retention and Formation of Planetesimals near the Snow Line in MRI-driven Turbulent Protoplanetary Disks

The first challenge in the formation of both terrestrial planets and the cores of gas giants is the retention of grains in protoplanetary disks. In most regions of these disks, gas attains sub-Keplerian speeds as a consequence of a negative pressure gradient. Hydrodynamic drag leads to orbital decay and depletion of the solid material in the disk, with characteristic timescales as short as only...

Dynamical Evolution of Planetesimals in Protoplanetary Disks

The current picture of terrestrial planet formation relies heavily on our understanding of the dynamical evolution of planetesimals — asteroid-like bodies thought to be planetary building blocks. In this study we investigate the growth of eccentricities and inclinations of planetesimals in spatially homogeneous protoplanetary disks using methods of kinetic theory. Emphasis is put on clarifying ...

Planetesimal Formation without Thresholds. Ii: Gravitational Instability of Solids in Turbulent Protoplanetary Disks

We show that small solids in low mass, turbulent protoplanetary disks collect into self-gravitating rings. Growth is faster than disk lifetimes and radial drift times for moderately strong turbulence, characterized by dimensionless diffusivities, αg . 10 —10 when particles are mm-sized. This range reflects a strong dependance on disk models. Growth is faster for higher particle surface densitie...

Global evolution of solid matter in turbulent protoplanetary disks II. Development of icy planetesimals

It is currently thought that planets around solar-type stars form by the accumulation of solid matter entrained in a gaseous protoplanetary disk.Wemodel part of this process starting from small particles suspended in a gaseous disk, and ending up with most of the solid material aggregated into 1–10–km– sized planetesimals. The radial distribution of solid material circumnavigating a star in the...

Streaming Instabilities in Protoplanetary Disks

Interpenetrating streams of solids and gas in a Keplerian disk produce a local, linear instability. The two components mutually interact via aerodynamic drag, which generates radial drift and triggers unstable modes. The secular instability does not require self-gravity, yet it generates growing particle density perturbations that could seed planetesimal formation. Growth rates are slower than ...
